Who We Are

Our Mission

Mission

At the UBC Cubing Club, our mission is to promote the exciting world of speedcubing within the University of British Columbia and the broader Vancouver community. We are passionate about fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment where cubers of all skill levels — from beginners to national competitors — can connect, learn, and grow. We actively work to:

  • Increase awareness and interest in speedcubing through demos, and casual meetups on campus
  • Host official World Cube Association (WCA) competitions right here at UBC, giving local cubers a chance to compete, achieve personal bests, and gain official rankings
  • Organize interclub competitions to build community across schools and organizations, encouraging friendly rivalry and collaboration

Whether you're solving your first cube or chasing sub-4 averages, the UBC Cubing Club is your hub for sharpening skills, making friends, and sharing the joy of cubing.

5x5 is the peak of cubing — the rest are just side quests for people scared of real cubes.

Bruce Hsieh

Bruce Hsieh

President (2020-2021)

Treasurer (2021-2023)

His speedcubing journey began in 2015 when he was deeply inspired by the cubing skills of none other than our Australian goat, Feliks Zemdegs. So far, his PB on 3x3 is 6.19s, while he averages around 11s. Presently, his main event is 4x4, slowly but surely pushing under 30s. His current goal is to clutch an 8s average on 3x3, pull off a second sub 30 on 4x4, and improve his 3 style memo & exec with 3 blind.

Yes, you can be a part of the club even if you can't solve a cube. 🙃
